Call out an animal name and your child shapes their whole body into that animal's pose or movement. Move through 5-8 animals slowly, holding each for a few breaths. Works in a small space and naturally winds down energy.

How to do it

  1. Clear a small floor space: enough for your child to stretch out fully in all directions.
  2. Call out the first animal: "Show me a cat." Model the pose if they're unsure (on hands and knees, back arching up, then dipping down).
  3. Hold the pose for 5-10 seconds or take 2-3 slow breaths in it.
  4. Call the next animal: "Now a frog." Crouch low, knees out, fingertips on the floor. Move through 5-8 animals at a relaxed pace.
  5. End with a slow, calm animal (sloth, sleeping bear) to wind down naturally.

What you need

  • Floor space
  • Mat

Signs it is working

Your child holds each pose rather than quickly moving to the next. Your child uses their whole body rather than just arms or legs. Your child asks to do more animals or suggests one of their own

If it is not quite clicking

Child doesn't know what the animal looks like: Demonstrate yourself rather than describing it: the visual model is far faster. Child rushes through poses without holding them: Slow your own movement and use a low, slow voice to pace them. Child wants to add sound to each animal: Let them: sound and movement together deepen the engagement without hurting anything.

Make it yours

Younger, 2-3 years: Use only 3-4 familiar animals with obvious physical shapes (dog, frog, snake). Model every pose yourself. Older, 5-7 years: Name more unusual animals (flamingo, crab, manta ray) and let the child figure out the shape. Add a "hold for 5 breaths" rule. Siblings: Take turns calling the next animal; the others all do the pose at the same time.
