Put a straight line of tape or string on the floor and challenge your child to walk along it without stepping off. Start with forward walking, add challenges as they gain confidence. No special equipment needed.
How to do it
- Lay a straight line of tape (painter's tape, masking tape, or any tape) or a piece of string on the floor, about 6-10 feet long.
- Ask your child to walk along the line from one end to the other with arms out for balance. Their feet should stay on or directly beside the line.
- Once they can walk it easily forward, introduce a new challenge: walk it backwards, walk it sideways, or walk it very slowly.
- Add an object challenge: carry a small soft toy or a spoon with a crumpled piece of paper in it across without dropping.
- Celebrate each successful crossing; treat each version as a new level.
What you need
- Tape
- Smooth floor area
- Soft toy
Signs it is working
Your child places their feet carefully rather than walking carelessly over the line. They use their arms for balance and repeat the crossing multiple times without being asked. They request the harder version when they master the current one
If it is not quite clicking
Your child steps off frequently and gets frustrated: Widen the "line" by putting down two parallel strips of tape 4-5 inches apart: they just need to stay between them. They find the carrying challenge too easy: Use a spoon with a small ball of paper that actually wobbles. Tape isn't available: Use a long piece of string or a folded towel laid flat: any visible straight line works
Make it yours
Younger (2-3y): Use two strips of tape to make a wider lane, and just walking it forward without stepping outside is the challenge. Older (5-7y): Add curves or zigzags instead of a straight line, or time each crossing and try to beat the record. Siblings: Each gets their own line, or take turns crossing the same line while the other coaches
