A balance game where the child walks across a space with a beanbag or small soft object balanced on their head, keeping it there without hands, then adds turns and stops. Practises balance and slow, controlled movement.

How to do it

  1. Clear a path across the room and place a beanbag or small soft object on your child's head.
  2. Have them walk slowly from one side to the other, keeping it balanced without holding it.
  3. If it falls, they pause, pick it up, replace it, and carry on from there.
  4. Once they can cross steadily, add a challenge such as turning around, stopping on "freeze," or walking a curved path.
  5. Keep going with new little challenges, or race gently to see who can cross without a drop.

What you need

  • Beanbag
  • Space

Signs it is working

Your child walks with slow, controlled steps to keep the object balanced. They reset calmly when it falls. They enjoy adding turns and stops

If it is not quite clicking

The object keeps sliding off: Use a flatter one such as a folded cloth and a shorter distance to build early success. Your child rushes and it always drops: Encourage slow motion or count steps together. Balancing on the head is too hard: Start with balancing it on a flat open hand while walking

Make it yours

Younger, 4 years: Use a light folded cloth, a short path, and let them steady it with a hand at first. Older, 6-8 years: Add turns, stops, stepping over a low object, or balancing on the back of the hand. Group or siblings: Gentle races or a follow-the-leader balance walk
