You sing a slow, gentle song and touch each body part in turn, pausing to let your toddler point along, a warm, close ritual that builds their sense of their own body and new words.

How to do it

  1. Sit face to face with your toddler somewhere calm and unhurried.
  2. Sing a slow, simple song and gently touch one body part as you name it.
  3. Pause after each part and give your toddler time to point to it or touch it themselves.
  4. Follow their lead if they point to a part out of order and name that one.
  5. End with a cuddle or a favourite closing line so the ritual has a soft finish.

Make it yours

Younger (12-15mo): Name just a few parts and touch them softly. Older (2-3y): Let them name the part before you do. Siblings: Sing it as a lap game with each child taking a turn
