Your child designs and builds a small bridge from a set of limited materials, then tests how much weight it holds before redesigning to hold more. A hands-on build-and-test challenge with clear results.

How to do it

  1. Set the challenge together so your child builds a bridge that spans a fixed gap (between two chairs or two stacks of books) from a limited set of materials.
  2. Have your child sketch a design and think about which shapes might make it stronger before building.
  3. Let them build their first bridge from the agreed materials only.
  4. Test it by adding weight gradually (coins, books, or a cup filling with water) and noting how much it held before it gave way.
  5. Ask them to change one thing based on what they saw, rebuild, and test again to compare.

Signs it is working

Your child sketches or plans a design before building rather than piling materials up. They test with gradually increasing weight rather than one big load. They change a specific feature after the first test and compare the results

If it is not quite clicking

The first bridge collapses at once: Treat it as data and ask where it gave way so they know what to strengthen. Your child wants to add unlimited materials: Hold the limit firm, since the constraint is the challenge. They are unsure how to make it stronger: Prompt them to look at triangles, folds, or supports underneath

Make it yours

Younger, 9-10 years: A shorter gap and more forgiving materials such as card and tape, with less focus on measuring the load. Older, 12 years and up: Measure the exact load in coins or grams and chart the results across designs to compare. Siblings: Each builds with the same materials and gap, then they compare which design held most and why.
