Your child builds the tallest structure they can from a mix of materials, then talks about what is holding it up. Toppling and rebuilding are part of it; the problem-solving is the point.

How to do it

  1. Gather a mix of stackable materials (blocks, cups, boxes, cans, lids) and clear a flat spot on the floor or a low table.
  2. Invite your child to build the tallest tower they can that still stands on its own.
  3. Let them try, topple, and rebuild without stepping in to fix it for them.
  4. When something falls, ask what they think happened and what they could change.
  5. When they finish, ask what is keeping the tower standing and admire it together before tidying up.

What you need

  • Stackable items
  • Flat surface

Make it yours

Younger, 4 years: Use only large soft blocks or boxes and celebrate any tower that stands. Older, 5-6 years: Add a rule such as "use three different materials" or measure the tower against their own height. Siblings: Give each child their own pile so towers do not get knocked into, or have them build one tower together and take turns adding a piece.

Try this with your child.
