Scatter colored objects on the floor: cloth pieces, sheets of paper, or cushions. Call out a color and your child runs to jump onto it. Vary the pace, add sequences, or call two colors for older children.
How to do it
- Scatter 4-6 objects of different colors on the floor across a clear area: colored cloth pieces, sheets of construction paper, or differently colored cushions. Space them out so your child has to move to reach each one.
- Call out a color: "Jump on red!" Your child runs and jumps onto that color.
- Call the next color as soon as they land. Keep the pace lively.
- Vary the challenge: call two colors in a row ("red, then blue!"), call the same color twice in a row to catch them off guard, or whisper the color slowly to build suspense.
- Before starting, agree on how many color calls you'll do: "We're playing 10 jumps, then we're done." Count down as you go: "Jump 8... Jump 9... Last one!" This gives the child a clear, anticipatable ending so stopping doesn't feel arbitrary. Alternatively, play until the child calls all the colors successfully once each: a natural game completion.
What you need
- Colored objects
- Clear floor area
Signs it is working
Your child responds quickly to each color call. They run deliberately to the correct spot rather than any spot. They laugh when they land correctly. They ask for harder variations after mastering the basic version
If it is not quite clicking
Child keeps jumping on the wrong color: Reduce to only 2-3 colors and confirm they know the color names before playing: the game requires basic color recognition. The objects slide on hard floors: Tape the paper pieces down or use non-slip mats under cloth pieces. Child wants to start calling colors themselves: Let them: switching roles extends the game significantly.
Make it yours
Younger, 2-3 years: Use only 2-3 colors, call them slowly, and celebrate every correct jump: this is a color learning game as much as a movement game at this age. Older, 5-7 years: Introduce sequences ("red, blue, yellow: go!") or add a rule that they can only hop on one foot. Siblings: One calls colors while others jump, or race to the spot: first one to land on the called color scores a point.
