With an adult alongside, your child follows a simple recipe from start to finish, taking charge of the steps that are safe for their age while the adult handles heat and sharp knives.

How to do it

  1. Pick a simple recipe together and read through all the steps before starting, so your child knows the order.
  2. Your child gathers and measures the ingredients and sets out what is needed.
  3. They do the age-safe steps such as mixing, spreading, and assembling, while the adult does all stovetop or oven heat and any sharp-knife cutting.
  4. Follow the sequence together, with your child watching timing and calling the next step.
  5. When the dish is done, share it, and have your child help with the wash-up and wiping down.

Make it yours

Younger (6 to 8 years): Pick a no-heat recipe such as assembling or a simple cold mix, with the adult doing any cutting. Older (10 to 12 years): A recipe with more steps and, with close side-by-side support, some bread-knife cutting of soft items and more timing to manage. Lower-intensity (calmer, less mess): Choose a no-heat, low-mess recipe with few steps, lay tools out in order first, and skip the timing pressure, so a child who finds a hot, busy, or messy kitchen overwhelming can still cook a whole dish at their own pace. Siblings: Split the steps so each child owns a stage, one measuring, one mixing. Sensory note for parents: Expect the usual kitchen mix of smells, sizzling sounds, warm surfaces, and sticky or wet textures, and moderate mess to clean up afterward
