Your child takes on a mediator role to help settle a small, everyday family disagreement, hearing both sides fairly and helping the group find a way forward. A shared family practice that gives the preteen a real, respected role.

How to do it

  1. At a calm moment, introduce the idea of a family mediator and agree a few simple ground rules together, such as one person speaks at a time.
  2. Pick a small, low-stakes disagreement to practise on (whose turn for a chore, what to watch, how to share a space).
  3. Have your child, as mediator, ask each side to say what they want and why, without interrupting.
  4. Ask them to sum up each side fairly so both people feel heard, then invite ideas for a fair way forward.
  5. Close by agreeing on one idea to try, and thank the mediator for helping the family talk it through.

What you need

  • Disagreement
  • Calm space
  • Ground rules

Signs it is working

Your child lets each side finish before responding. They sum up both sides in a way each person agrees is fair. The group leaves with one agreed thing to try, even if small

If it is not quite clicking

The disagreement gets heated: Pause the mediation and return to it once everyone is calm, since practising when calm is the point. Your child takes a side: Gently remind them the mediator helps both sides be heard rather than picking a winner. No solution appears: Agreeing to think about it and revisit later is a fine outcome

Make it yours

Younger, 9-10 years: The adult co-leads and the child practises just the summing-up part, hearing each side and repeating it back. Older, 12 years and up: Let them run a short mediation more independently with the adult only stepping in if needed. Whole family: Rotate the mediator role so different members try it over time.
