Your toddler waters a plant or fills a pet bowl with a small scoop, a gentle daily caring job that gives them a real way to look after a living thing.

How to do it

  1. Choose one caring job, such as watering a plant or scooping food into a pet bowl.
  2. Fill a small watering can or scoop with a little water or food.
  3. Show your toddler once where the water or food goes.
  4. Hand over the can or scoop and let them tip it in, staying beside them.
  5. Say a simple closing line together, such as the plant had its drink, so the job feels done.

What you need

  • Watering can
  • Plant or pet bowl
  • Water or food

Make it yours

Younger (12-15mo): Hold the can with them and let them help tip. Older (2-3y): Add checking the soil first or giving the pet fresh water too. Siblings: Take turns so each child does one part of the job
