Your baby lies on their back on a firm mat with nothing propping or positioning them, free to kick, reach, twist, and eventually roll on their own timeline while you stay close by. Movement led entirely by the baby.

How to do it

  1. Lay a firm mat or folded blanket on the floor in a safe, clear space away from furniture edges, cords, and other children.
  2. Place your baby on their back, dressed comfortably so they can move freely. Do not prop them up or position their limbs.
  3. Sit or lie nearby where they can see you. Let them kick, wave, reach, and turn without you moving them into a position.
  4. Watch and narrate lightly if you like ("you found your foot"), but resist the urge to sit them up or hand them into a roll.
  5. If they enjoy it, place a single object a little to one side as an invitation to reach or turn toward, then let them decide.
  6. End when your baby fusses, tires, or wants to be held. Keep sessions to a few minutes at first and build up as they enjoy it.

What you need

  • Mat
  • Invitation object

Make it yours

Younger (newborn to 3 months): A few minutes on the back, unpropped, is plenty. Movements are small and reflexive at first. Older (6 months and up): Give more floor space as they begin to pivot, scoot, and roll toward things; keep the surface firm, not soft. No mat: A clean firm rug or a blanket over a hard floor works. Avoid soft, sinking surfaces like a bed or thick duvet.
