Put on music and dance together. When the music stops, everyone freezes: no moving, no laughing, hold the pose. When the music starts again, dance. Repeat until the energy is spent. No materials needed beyond a way to play music.

How to do it

  1. Find a clear space of at least 6 feet across for dancing without bumping into things.
  2. Start playing music at a comfortable volume.
  3. Dance with your child: any style, any movement.
  4. Pause the music without warning. Both of you freeze completely.
  5. Hold the freeze for 3-5 seconds, then start the music again. Repeat pauses every 20-40 seconds for 5-10 minutes.

What you need

  • Music device
  • Clear floor space

Signs it is working

Your child dances freely when the music plays. They make a visible effort to hold still during freezes. They laugh, ask you to start again, and keep dancing longer than the first round

If it is not quite clicking

Your child keeps moving during the freeze: Make it a game: you both check each other, and whoever moves first does a silly pose before the next round. They lose interest after a few rounds: Change the music to something faster or sillier. They're too wound up to freeze at all: Switch to a slower song for the final few rounds to bring the energy down before stopping

Make it yours

Younger (2-3y): Freezes of only 1-2 seconds work better than longer holds; the pause-and-resume rhythm matters more than the stillness. Older (5-7y): Add a rule: freeze in a shape (balance on one leg, touch your nose, make a silly face), or the last person to freeze sits out a round. Siblings: Works naturally with any number of children. Let older siblings control the music pause. Stopping signal: Agree on the number of rounds before starting: "we'll do five freezes, then we stop." Count the freezes aloud together and announce "last freeze!" on the final pause so your child can prepare for the end without distress.
