You and your child each put together a small time capsule, including a letter and some predictions for a future self, then seal it to open on an agreed date. A shared moment of looking forward together.

How to do it

  1. Agree together when the capsule will be opened, such as in one year or on a future birthday, and find a container to keep it in.
  2. Each of you writes a short letter to your future self and jots down a few predictions about what might change by then.
  3. Add a few small keepsakes that capture this moment, such as a ticket, a drawing, a photo, or a note about a current favourite.
  4. Share only the parts each of you wants to read aloud, and let the rest stay private inside the capsule.
  5. Seal it, mark the open-on date clearly, and put it somewhere safe together.

Make it yours

Younger, 8-10 years: Drawings and a few dictated sentences work in place of a long letter. Older, 12 years and up: Add a longer letter and a list of questions to answer again when the capsule is opened. Siblings: Each makes their own capsule and everyone opens them together on the agreed date.
