A sensory guessing game where a child closes their eyes or wears a blindfold and tries to name small tastes of safe, familiar foods by taste and smell. Practises noticing and describing flavours and smells.

How to do it

  1. Choose a few safe, familiar foods your child already eats, cut into small easy-to-chew pieces, and check for any allergies first.
  2. Have your child close their eyes or wear a soft blindfold, staying seated and calm.
  3. Offer one small piece at a time, letting them smell and taste it, and never rush or surprise them.
  4. Ask them to describe it (sweet, sour, crunchy) and guess what it is.
  5. Reveal each answer, then swap roles or try the next food.

What you need

  • Familiar foods
  • Blindfold
  • Water

Make it yours

Younger, 4 years: Use just two or three favourite foods, keep pieces very small and soft, and allow eyes open but looking away. Older, 7-8 years: Add smell-only rounds or trickier similar flavours to tell apart. Siblings: Take turns being the taster and the one choosing the food
