Help Unpack Groceries

When shopping returns home, child helps remove items from bags and sort them - what goes cold, what stays out, what goes in a cupboard. A real role in the household routine.

When shopping arrives home, your child helps take items out of bags and sort them: cold things in one pile, cupboard things in another. A real contribution to putting the shopping away that happens naturally after every trip.

How to do it

  1. When bags arrive home, invite your child to help: "let's put the shopping away."
  2. The grown-up handles raw meat, eggs, glass jars, heavy items, and anything fragile or requiring careful refrigerator placement.
  3. Give your child the safe, lightweight items: packaged dry goods, fruit, vegetables, soft packaging.
  4. Set up a simple sorting rule for their age: "cold things go in this pile, everything else goes here" for under-4s; or "fridge, freezer, or shelf" as three categories for older children.
  5. As the grown-up puts items in the fridge or freezer, let your child carry the shelf items to the cupboard or hand them over.

What you need

  • Shopping bags
  • Groceries

Signs it is working

Your child takes items out and sorts them into the right piles without guidance after the first few. They carry shelf items to the cupboard independently. They want to unpack every time shopping comes home

If it is not quite clicking

Your child wants to handle items they shouldn't (raw meat packaging, glass): Redirect calmly: "that one's for grown-ups: here, take this one." They want to put things in the wrong place: Gently correct once and move on. They lose interest quickly: Let them stop: even unpacking three items is a contribution. Shopping is heavy from a large trip: Limit their role to the bag they can actually lift

Make it yours

Younger, 2-3 years: Just take items out of the bag and hand them to the adult. The sorting step comes later. Older, 5-6 years: Independently sort into fridge, freezer, and shelf categories; carry items to the right place unassisted; count items as they go. Wet market returns in VN/TW/SG: Items often come in multiple small plastic bags rather than one large bag: each bag can be the child's task unit.
