While someone in your family is cooking, your child washes the vegetables in a bowl of water. A real contribution to the meal, and a chance to be part of the kitchen routine.
How to do it
- Set up a sturdy bowl or basin of cool water on a low surface where your child can reach safely: a kitchen table or stool-height counter.
- Lay out the vegetables that need washing (carrots, potatoes, peppers, cucumbers: anything sturdy that can handle a child's grip).
- Show your child how to swish each vegetable in the water and rub off visible dirt with their hands.
- Have a clean bowl or colander ready for washed vegetables to go into.
- As the cooking adult, continue your prep nearby. Check in occasionally: "How's that carrot looking?": without taking over.
What you need

Signs it is working
Your child washes each vegetable for 30+ seconds without losing interest. They place finished vegetables in the clean bowl without prompting after the first one or two. They want to do it again at the next meal.
If it is not quite clicking
Child loses interest after 1-2 vegetables: That's okay: let them stop and continue your prep. Water splashes a lot: Lower the water level and place the bowl on a towel. Child wants to wash vegetables that are already washed: Hand them a new one (or let them wash the same ones twice: the goal is engagement, not efficiency). Child wants to use a knife to "cut": Gently redirect: knives are for grown-ups; their job is washing.
Make it yours
Younger, 2-3 years: Wash just one or two vegetables, keep it short, and accept more splashing. Parent can place each vegetable in the bowl for the child and lift it out when "done." Older, 5-7 years: Add brushing with a vegetable brush, sort vegetables by color after washing, and count the vegetables as they go into the colander. Siblings: One child washes, another places into the colander, or each has their own bowl with different vegetables.
