Set up a short obstacle course through the living room using pillows, chairs, towels, and tape. Your child runs the course, and you adjust the challenge each time. Works in a single room with ordinary household items.
How to do it
- Gather 4-6 household items to use as obstacles (chair to crawl under, cushions to jump over, towel to walk along, tape line to balance on).
- Lay them out in a sequence with a clear start and finish.
- Walk the course with your child first so they know what to do at each obstacle.
- Let them run it. Time them on a second run if they want a challenge.
- Change one or two obstacles and run it again. Ask your child to add an obstacle of their choice.
What you need
- Chairs
- Cushions
- Towels
- Tape
- Floor path
Signs it is working
Your child completes the course without skipping obstacles. They ask to run it again. They suggest changes or additions to the layout on their own
If it is not quite clicking
Your child runs past obstacles rather than doing the action: Walk it together first and exaggerate each move so the expectation is clear. The course takes too long to set up and your child loses patience waiting: Involve them in setting it up: carrying a cushion or placing the tape. Your child finds it too easy and loses interest: Add a challenge: carry a small soft toy through the whole course without dropping it
Make it yours
Younger, 2-3 years: Use just 2-3 obstacles maximum. Focus on one movement type per obstacle (only jumping, or only crawling) so there's no confusion. Older, 5-7 years: Add complexity: walk backwards through one section, hop on one foot, or complete a task at each obstacle (pick up a block, name a color). Siblings: Run together side by side on parallel tracks, or one sets up while the other runs. Stopping signal: Agree on the number of runs before starting: "we'll do three runs each, then pack the course away." Announce "last run!" before the final attempt so your child can prepare for the end without a meltdown.
