Look at the dinosaurs, plants and people around you at Cloud Forest and compare their sizes with words and gestures. This 5 to 15 minute game needs no supplies after admission; older children can put several things in order from smallest to biggest.

How to do it

  1. Stop on a clear public path where you can see a dinosaur and other things nearby without blocking anyone, away from the waterfall and behind barriers.
  2. One grown-up stays beside one child, within arm's reach throughout. Compare with your eyes and words only; do not touch or climb.
  3. Your child chooses two things they can see. Talk about which is bigger, taller or longer, and how you can tell.
  4. For older children: invite them to put three or four things in order from smallest to biggest. No writing, measuring tools or cleanup are needed.

Make it yours

Ages 3 to 4: Compare just two things and use one word, such as big or small. A point or a look is a full answer. Ages 6 to 10: Invite ordering of several things, or estimate how many children tall a dinosaur might be, then talk it over. There is no correct-answer target. Quiet or seated version: Choose only what is visible from the child's seated position and use soft words or yes/no signals. Do not move closer to make something visible.
