Your child picks a real life skill they want to be able to do, breaks it into steps, practises until they can do it confidently, and marks the milestone with a home-made certificate. A genuine, self-paced challenge with a real result.

How to do it

  1. Have your child choose a real, useful life skill such as sewing on a button, basic first aid, reading a bus route, or managing a small budget.
  2. Together, break the skill into a few clear can-do steps that show they have it (for example, thread a needle, then sew a button, then finish neatly).
  3. Let them practise the steps over one or more sessions, with an adult alongside for any step that needs it.
  4. When they can do each step confidently, have them show you the whole skill from start to finish.
  5. Mark the milestone by making a simple certificate together listing what they can now do.

What you need

  • Life skill
  • Skill materials
  • Paper and pens

Make it yours

Younger, 9-10 years: Choose a simpler skill and keep the step list short, with an adult alongside throughout. Older, 12 years and up: Choose a more involved skill and add a short written how-to they could teach from. Siblings: Each works towards their own skill and they show each other at the end.
