Your baby lies on their back and watches soft, slow-moving light and shadow on the ceiling or wall, made by a gentle light or a slowly turning object near a window. A calm, low-stimulation moment of visual wonder.
How to do it
- Wait for a calm, alert moment and lay your baby on their back on a firm, flat surface where they have a clear view of a ceiling or plain wall.
- Create slow, soft movement of light by drawing a curtain part-way and letting daylight shift, or moving a soft (non-glaring) light gently, or hanging a slowly turning object near a window so it casts a moving shadow.
- Keep the light soft and never shine any light toward your baby's eyes.
- Sit close and let your baby watch. Follow their gaze; narrate softly and sparingly if you like, but mostly let them take it in.
- Keep movements slow and the room quiet; this is a wind-down, not a light show.
- Stop when your baby looks away, fusses, or grows drowsy.
What you need
- Soft light
- Flat surface
Make it yours
Younger (newborn to 3 months): High-contrast, slow, simple movement is best; keep it very brief. Older (7 months and up): Let them watch a slowly turning hung object, or a hand shadow you make together, and name what they see. No special setup: Shifting daylight through a curtain, or the shadow of a slowly waved cloth, works with no equipment at all.
