Stand facing each other. One person moves slowly: raising an arm, tilting their head, stepping to the side: while the other mirrors every movement as if they are a reflection. Switch who leads every minute or so.
How to do it
- Stand facing your child about 2-3 feet apart.
- Explain that you are the "mirror": whatever they do, you copy exactly at the same moment.
- They lead first. Move slowly and clearly so they can follow.
- After about a minute, say "switch": now you lead and they become the mirror.
- Keep movements slow and deliberate: raise one arm, turn your head, step sideways, crouch slowly. Avoid fast or sudden moves.
Signs it is working
Your child watches your face and body carefully. They begin to anticipate small movements. They laugh when you both move in sync. They move slowly when they lead, rather than making large sudden gestures
If it is not quite clicking
Child moves too fast to follow: Mirror it with exaggerated effort and laughter: this usually makes them slow down on their own. Child finds it hard to understand the mirror concept: Stand in front of an actual mirror together first and point to the reflection to explain. Child wants to go faster and the game becomes just copying movements quickly: Acknowledge the energy and switch to a different game; the mirror game works best slow.
Make it yours
Younger, 2-3 years: Simplify to one movement at a time: arm goes up, arm comes down: with clear pauses between. Matching a single simple action is enough. Older, 5-7 years: Try to keep the mirror going for 2-3 minutes without laughing or breaking sync; see how long you can maintain the game together. Siblings: One leads while two others both mirror; the leader chooses who is the "best mirror."
