One person leads with slow, deliberate movements: arms, legs, head, whole body: and the other copies exactly as if looking in a mirror. No talking. Switch leader after 2-3 minutes. Close attention, not speed, is the skill.
How to do it
- Stand facing each other about 2-3 feet apart in a clear space.
- Decide who leads first. Explain the rule: the leader moves slowly and deliberately, the mirror copies everything exactly. No talking during the round.
- The leader begins with simple movements: one arm rising slowly, then the other, then a head tilt. Slow is the key: fast movement breaks the mirror.
- Both players try to stay synchronised so an outside observer can't tell who is leading.
- After 2-3 minutes, say "switch" and the other player leads. Play 2-3 rounds each.
What you need
- Floor space
Signs it is working
Your child watches your face and body rather than looking away. Movements become slower and more deliberate over the first minute. They notice when they get out of sync and correct without being told. The no-talking rule holds for at least 30-60 seconds
If it is not quite clicking
Child mirrors the wrong side (moves their right arm when they should move their left): That is actually correct mirror behaviour: like a real mirror, left and right flip. Celebrate it rather than correcting it. Child can't hold still long enough to mirror: Start with just hands and face while both sit cross-legged: less body to coordinate makes the concept click faster. Child keeps talking: Make silence the explicit challenge: "can we go a whole minute without a single word?": framing it as a game rather than a rule.
Make it yours
Younger, 3-4 years: Do the sitting-only version with just arms and face; the concept works before the full-body version is achievable. Older, 5-7 years: Leader can move in slow circles or walk slowly across the room while the mirror follows: much harder and more engaging for older kids. Travel version: Works at a restaurant table with just face and hands: no space required at all.
