A dancing-and-freezing game where players move while music plays and hold completely still the moment it stops. Burns energy and practises stopping on a signal in a small indoor space.

How to do it

  1. Clear a space with room to move and no hard corners or furniture in the way.
  2. Start the music and let everyone dance however they like.
  3. Stop the music suddenly; everyone must freeze in place and hold still.
  4. Anyone still moving after the music stops sits out for the next round, or does a fun forfeit like a silly pose.
  5. Play more rounds until one player is left or everyone wants to stop, then start again.

Signs it is working

Your child dances freely when the music plays and stops quickly when it cuts off. They hold their freeze for a few seconds. They ask to play again.

If it is not quite clicking

Freezing on the spot is hard: Count "freeze in three, two, one" for the first few rounds so the stop is predictable. Sitting out upsets a young child: Play the no-elimination version where a freeze wobble just earns a giggly forfeit and everyone stays in. Dancers drift into each other: Pause and give everyone a spot to return to between rounds.

Make it yours

Younger, 3-4 years: Skip elimination entirely; the fun is the freeze. Keep rounds short. Older, 6-8 years: Add freeze challenges such as freezing on one foot or in a chosen shape, and make the stops trickier. Group: Works well for parties; the music controller can also call out a pose to freeze in.
