Nature Collage

Collect leaves, petals, twigs from outside and arrange them on paper into a picture with glue.

Head outside to collect natural materials: leaves, petals, small sticks, seeds: then bring them inside and glue them onto paper into any picture or pattern your child imagines.

How to do it

  1. Go outside together and collect natural materials: fallen leaves, flower petals, small twigs, seeds, grass stems. A small bag or container helps. Collect more than you think you need.
  2. Back inside, spread the materials on the table so your child can see the full range.
  3. Give your child a sheet of thick paper or card and a glue stick or white glue.
  4. Let them arrange and glue freely. Some children compose a picture; others make patterns; others just glue everything in a pile. All are fine.
  5. Leave to dry flat. If using white liquid glue, this takes 15-20 minutes.

Signs it is working

Your child engages with selecting and placing materials for at least 5 minutes. They make deliberate choices ("I want this leaf here"). The finished collage stays on the paper without pieces immediately falling off

If it is not quite clicking

Child collects but doesn't want to glue: Let the arranging on paper be the activity: even without glue, composing the pieces is creative work. Glue stick isn't holding heavier items (thick sticks, acorns): Switch to white liquid glue or just set them on top for display. The arrangement keeps shifting before it dries: Press a sheet of paper on top gently and leave a book on it for weight. Child wants to collect forever and never make anything: Agree on a number ("we'll collect 10 things, then go inside").

Make it yours

Younger, 2-3 years: Skip the gluing: just collecting and sorting the natural materials by sise, color, or type is a complete activity. Older, 5-7 years: Try making a figure, animal, or landscape deliberately; encourage them to plan the composition before gluing. Rainy day: Use a nature materials box saved from a previous walk if going outside isn't possible.
