Before you go, share one real memory about a night light, lantern, or celebration you remember. Then your child chooses one official festival activity they would most like to try, giving the visit a small shared beginning.

How to do it

  1. On the way to the festival, share one true, short memory, such as 'I remember loving the warm light from a lamp at night.'
  2. If you do not have a Mid-Autumn memory to share, say what you are curious to see together instead; a favourite picture book can be an optional prompt.
  3. Offer two or three official programme choices that fit your child, such as lantern making, hanfu dress-up and photography, heritage games, or stamp printing, and let them choose one hope for the visit.
  4. At arrival, remind each other, 'We came to see if we could try our pick,' then enjoy whatever is available.

Signs it is working

The family shares one genuine story or curiosity and the child makes a choice or shows interest in a festival activity.

If it is not quite clicking

If the child cannot choose or the chosen activity is unavailable, the parent can choose a nearby official activity together and keep the conversation to one sentence.

Make it yours

For toddlers, offer only two choices and accept a point, look, or sign. For older children, ask what they expect to enjoy about their choice.
