While a grown-up prepares a meal, your child handles simple food preparation using only their hands: peeling a banana, tearing lettuce leaves, pulling grapes from a stem, or shelling peas. No knives, no heat: all hand tasks.
How to do it
- Choose a hand-appropriate food task based on what's being prepared. Good options: peel a banana (tear the top and pull), tear lettuce or leafy greens into a bowl, pull grapes from a bunch, shell peas from a pod, or strip corn husks.
- Set up your child at the kitchen table or a low surface near the cooking area with their food items and a bowl for the finished pieces.
- Show the motion once: "peel down, like this" or "pull the leaves off like this": then hand it over.
- The cooking adult continues nearby. The child's task runs alongside the cooking, not in the middle of the stove area.
- When the task is done, name it: "you shelled all the peas" or "you tore the salad." Use the prepared food in the meal.
What you need
- Produce for preparation
- Bowl
- Step stool
Signs it is working
Your child completes their food task without abandoning it partway through. The prepared food makes it into the meal. They ask to do the same or a different food task next time
If it is not quite clicking
The child eats all the grapes instead of putting them in the bowl: Give them a small portion with a clear "eating grapes" bowl and a "bowl bowl": normalise eating some while working. Lettuce-tearing becomes shredding into very tiny pieces: That's fine for salads; if it matters for presentation, offer something like pea-shelling instead. They want to use a knife: Firmly redirect: knives are for grown-ups; their job is the hand task. They finish quickly and want more: Have another food item ready
Make it yours
Younger, 2-3 years: One banana or a small handful of pea pods is enough. Short tasks with visible results work best. Older, 5-6 years: A larger quantity, or two different food prep tasks in sequence (peel and then tear). Can describe what each food is called and where it comes from. Allergens present in the meal's other ingredients: The food prep task itself (banana, lettuce, grapes, peas) involves no common allergens and is safe.
