During a natural pause near lantern making or on the night-time stroll, parent and child secretly choose the lantern they think the other person will like best. Point together on three and find out how well you know each other.

How to do it

  1. Choose a natural pause near lantern making or during the official night-time stroll, without interrupting a workshop or blocking others.
  2. Each quietly chooses one lantern in view that they think the other person would like best.
  3. Count, 'One, two, three,' and point at the same time.
  4. Reveal why you chose it; a match is fun, and a surprising answer is fun too. Stop after one round.

Signs it is working

The parent and child discover a match, a surprise, or one new detail about each other's taste.

If it is not quite clicking

If no lanterns are visible, use a colour, shape, or detail in the child's own lantern-making work if appropriate, or skip the game.

Make it yours

For children aged 6 to 8, offer two lanterns to choose from. Older children can make their choice more difficult by explaining the other person's likely reason.
