Your child notices a small need in their community, plans a doable way to help, and carries it out with the family, then talks about how it went.

How to do it

  1. Talk together about a small local need your child has noticed, such as a neighbour who could use a hand or a cause they care about.
  2. Help them pick one small, safe, doable action, keeping it realistic for what your family can manage.
  3. Make a simple plan together, listing what is needed, who to check with, and when to do it.
  4. Carry out the action together, with your child taking the parts they can lead.
  5. Afterwards, sit down and talk about what happened and how it felt, without turning it into a lesson.

What you need

  • Paper and pencil
  • Action materials

Make it yours

Younger (6 to 8 years): Keep it very simple and close to home, such as making a card or sharing toys, with an adult leading the arranging. Older (10 to 12 years): Let them lead more of the planning and reach out to others, within safe limits. Siblings: Plan and carry out one shared action together, splitting the tasks
