Your toddler pulls short ribbons that are threaded through holes in a box, a quiet hands-on task that lets them explore pulling and how the ribbons move.

How to do it

  1. Thread a few short ribbons through holes in a box or lid so a little of each shows on both sides.
  2. Knot each ribbon at both ends so it cannot pull all the way out.
  3. Set the box in front of your toddler and show one gentle pull.
  4. Let them pull the ribbons and watch how they slide and reappear.
  5. Sit nearby while they explore, adding a ribbon of a new texture if they stay interested.

What you need

  • Box
  • Short ribbons

Signs it is working

Your toddler grasps a ribbon and pulls it. They watch the ribbon move through the hole and reach for another. They stay with the box for a few minutes, calm and focused

If it is not quite clicking

The ribbons pull out: Tie bigger knots at both ends so they stay put. They lose interest: Add a ribbon with a different texture or a bead firmly fixed too large to swallow. They try to mouth the ribbons: Redirect and keep the session short and supervised

Make it yours

Younger (12-15 months): Use just two thick ribbons and very gentle holes. Older (2-3 years): Add ribbons of different textures to compare. Siblings: Keep this one supervised and one child at a time because of the ribbon safety rules
