Fill a tray or shallow container with dry rice and add cups, spoons, and small objects to hide and find. Your child scoops, pours, digs, and explores: calmly engaged while you do something else nearby.

How to do it

  1. Pour 2-4 cups of dry rice into a shallow container (a baking tray, large bowl, or storage box works). Place a towel or sheet underneath to catch spills.
  2. Add 2-3 scooping tools: measuring cups, spoons, small bowls.
  3. Hide 4-6 small objects in the rice (figurines, large beads, small toys appropriate for your child's age).
  4. Show your child the setup, point out one hidden object, and let them explore.
  5. When they're done, store the rice and objects in a sealed container: this can come out again next time.

What you need

  • Rice
  • Tray
  • Towel or sheet
  • Scooping tools
  • Small objects

Signs it is working

Your child focuses on the rice for at least 10 minutes without needing redirection. They return to the bin multiple times over days or weeks. They invent their own play (pretend cooking, transferring rice between cups, building "mountains")

If it is not quite clicking

Child loses interest in 2-3 minutes: The bin may need more variety: add a new hidden object or a new tool. Child dumps the rice intentionally: Calmly help them pour it back; this is usually a one-time behavior. Child tries to taste the rice (under-3s): Redirect and supervise more closely; the bin may be premature for their stage. Siblings fight over the bin: Split materials into two containers

Make it yours

Younger (2-3y): Use larger objects only (4cm+), no small beads or coins. Skip the hidden-object element initially; just pouring and transferring is enough. Older (5-7y): Add complexity: sort hidden objects by color or sise when found, time how fast they find all objects, theme the bin (jungle animals, pirate treasure, space rocks). No rice variant: Use dry pasta, dry oats, or dry beans (under-3 only with very large beans). For Asian-household contexts, rice is universally available; for Western contexts, all of these substitute well. Stopping signal: Before starting, agree on when the bin goes away: for example, "we'll play until you've found all the hidden objects, then we pack it up." Announce "last find!" when the final object is about to be discovered so your child can prepare for the end.
