A quick hand game turned into a friendly family knockout, where pairs play rock-paper-scissors and winners play winners until one is left. Fills any waiting moment with no materials.

How to do it

  1. Remind everyone of the three hand shapes and what beats what (rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock).
  2. Pair up players; each pair counts "rock, paper, scissors" together and shows a shape on the last word.
  3. Play best of three in each pair so a single unlucky throw does not decide it.
  4. Winners pair up and play again; keep going until one player has beaten everyone.
  5. Reshuffle and start a fresh round whenever you like.

Signs it is working

Your child forms the three shapes and remembers what beats what. They count in rhythm and reveal on the last beat. They stay cheerful whether they win or lose the round.

If it is not quite clicking

Your child changes their shape after seeing yours: Count out loud together and reveal on an agreed beat. Losing early upsets them: Switch to a no-knockout version where everyone just keeps playing for fun. Two players keep tying: That is part of the game; just replay the throw.

Make it yours

Younger, 4 years: Drop the knockout and just play single rounds for the fun of the reveal. Older, 7-8 years: Run a proper bracket with everyone, or add the extra shapes version if the family knows it. Group: Great for parties; losers can cheer for the player who beat them in the next round.
