A shared storytelling game where each person adds one sentence in turn, building a story together that grows sillier and more surprising as it goes. A warm, playful moment the whole family makes together.
How to do it
- Sit together, or play while travelling or winding down, and decide who starts.
- The first player says one sentence to open a story.
- Going around in turn, each player adds just one sentence that follows on from the last.
- Keep passing the story around, letting it twist and surprise everyone.
- Wrap it up after a lap or two by agreeing on an ending sentence together.
Signs it is working
Your child adds a sentence that connects to the one before. They wait for their turn and listen to others' additions. They laugh at the twists and want to keep the story going
If it is not quite clicking
Child freezes on their turn: Offer a gentle starter such as "and then suddenly..." or let them pass without pressure. One player tries to take the whole story: Remind everyone it is one sentence each. The story wanders somewhere unsettling for a young child: Steer the next sentence somewhere lighter
Make it yours
Younger (5y): Keep sentences short and let an adult help bridge between turns; a few words count as a turn. Older (7-8y): Add a rule that each sentence must include a surprise, or set a theme such as space or the sea. Group: Works well with grandparents and larger gatherings; the more voices, the wilder the tale.
