Create shadow puppets using hands and objects with a flashlight to explore light, shadows, storytelling, and imaginative play.

How to do it

  1. Find a room that can be darkened. Hang a white sheet or use a blank wall as your screen.
  2. Position flashlight or lamp to shine on the wall from a few feet away.
  3. Show child how to make hand shadows: start simple with a bird or dog.
  4. Let child experiment with different hand positions and distances from the light.
  5. Create a simple story together using the shadow characters.

What you need

  • Flashlight or table lamp
  • White wall or sheet
  • Optional: cardboard cutouts for puppets
  • Optional: popsicle sticks and tape

Signs it is working

Child is experimenting with hand positions, laughing at the shadows created, making up voices or stories for characters, requesting to make more shadows.

If it is not quite clicking

If shadows are blurry: move closer to wall or adjust light distance. If child can't make shapes: use cutouts instead of hands. If scared of darkness: keep room partially lit. If losing interest: introduce new characters or let child control the light.

Make it yours

Create cardboard puppet cutouts with popsicle stick handles. Use colored cellophane for colored shadows. Make shadow animations by moving slowly. Record a shadow puppet show. Experiment with multiple light sources.
