Whisk a small amount of dish soap and water in a bowl until it forms a stiff white foam. Your child sculpts, builds, and plays with the foam freely: it holds shapes briefly like soft snow but rinses off hands with no trace.

How to do it

  1. Pour about 2 tablespoons of dish soap into a bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of water (less water makes stiffer foam; experiment with your soap brand).
  2. Use a hand whisk or electric mixer to whip the mixture until it forms stiff white peaks: similar to whipped cream. This takes 2-3 minutes by hand or about 30 seconds with a mixer.
  3. Bring the bowl to your child with a tray or mat underneath to catch any foam that falls over the edge.
  4. Show your child they can scoop, shape, and build with the foam. It holds shapes for a short while before slowly collapsing. Cups, moulds, and flat surfaces all work as tools.
  5. Cleanup: foam rinses off hands and surfaces with a single wipe of water. The bowl and whisk wash up easily.

What you need

  • Dish soap
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Whisk or mixer
  • Tray or mat
  • Sculpting tools

Signs it is working

Your child handles the foam with their hands and explores the texture without hesitation. They attempt to build a shape: a hill, a face, a pile: and observe what happens as it slowly sinks. They ask for more foam when the bowl empties

If it is not quite clicking

The foam won't stiffen: Try a different dish soap: thicker, more concentrated soaps (standard bottle washing-up liquid rather than watery refill) work best; or reduce the water by half and whip longer. Your child is reluctant to touch the foam: Let them use a spoon first and poke at it from a small distance: sensory hesitation is common with new textures and usually resolves within a couple of minutes. The foam collapses too quickly for satisfying play: Add a pinch of table salt to the soap before whipping: this stiffens the foam and extends playtime noticeably

Make it yours

Younger (2-3y): Parent whips the foam; child explores freely. No tools needed: hands in foam is the whole activity. Keep the session short (10-15 min) as the texture novelty is the draw. Older (5-6y): Challenge them to build the tallest foam tower or sculpt a specific shape. Adding colour (older children): Add a drop of food colouring to the soap before whipping for coloured foam: note this increases mess potential (food colouring can stain; use on a tray and wipe quickly). No mixer: Whipping by hand with a fork or whisk takes longer but still works, and older children can take turns with the whisk
