You slowly roll a soft ball toward your sitting baby and invite them to push or roll it back, building an early back-and-forth exchange and a first taste of cause and effect. A simple shared game on the floor.
How to do it
- Sit on the floor facing your baby once they can sit steadily, a short distance apart, with a clear space between you.
- Slowly roll a soft, lightweight ball toward them so it arrives gently within reach.
- Let them touch, grab, pat, or push it however they like. Encourage a push or roll back with your open hands and a warm "send it back!"
- Whatever they do, respond with delight and roll it to them again, keeping the rhythm slow and the ball easy to track.
- Follow their lead: some rounds they will hold or mouth the ball, and that is fine.
- Stop when your baby loses interest or tips with tiredness.
What you need
- Soft ball
Signs it is working
Your baby tracks the rolling ball, reaches for it, and over time pushes or rolls it back toward you. A back-and-forth rhythm builds and they show delight in the exchange. They begin to anticipate the ball coming and send it back more deliberately.
If it is not quite clicking
Baby just holds or mouths the ball: That is fine early on; gently invite it back with open hands and keep it playful. The ball is hard to push: Use a lighter, grippier soft ball. Baby topples when reaching: Support them with a cushion behind or sit close so they lean into you, and keep rounds short so sitting stays comfortable.
Make it yours
Younger (new sitters, around 6-7 months): Sit very close so the ball reaches easily, and accept touching and grabbing rather than a return roll. Older (10 months and up): Widen the gap slightly, or roll to a gentle ramp so there is more to watch and chase. No ball: A soft rolled cloth or a lightweight round object that rolls gently works, as long as it is safe and larger than 5cm.
