Sweep the Floor

Give the child a small brush or broom and a dustpan; choose a small area to sweep together. A real contribution to the household that works on any floor type.

While a grown-up sweeps or tidies the floor, your child sweeps a small defined area with a child-sised brush and dustpan. A real contribution to household cleaning on any smooth floor surface.

How to do it

  1. Choose a small, contained area for your child to sweep: a 1-2 square metre patch, one step, or the area under one chair. Smaller is better to start; success matters more than coverage.
  2. Give your child a small brush or broom and a dustpan they can manage. Child-sised tools work better than adult brooms, which are too heavy and tall.
  3. Show how to sweep: short strokes toward the dustpan, then tilt the pan to capture what was swept.
  4. Let them sweep their zone while you sweep the larger area.
  5. At the end, walk to the bin together and tip the dustpan in.

Signs it is working

Your child sweeps in the right general direction and captures at least some debris in the dustpan. They carry the dustpan to the bin without tipping it. They ask to sweep again or want to do a bigger area

If it is not quite clicking

Debris scatters everywhere: Smaller strokes work better: demonstrate again. The dustpan won't cooperate: Hold it steady for them at first. They want to sweep more than their zone: Let them extend into another defined area rather than the whole room. The brush is too heavy or tall: Try a small hand brush instead. Two children both want to sweep: Each gets a separate zone

Make it yours

Younger, 2-3 years: A small brush sweeping into a dustpan the adult holds. Just the motion of sweeping is enough: capturing debris is a bonus. Older, 5-6 years: Sweep a larger zone, empty their own dustpan, and do a second pass to check what they missed. No small broom available: A clean paintbrush or large hairbrush can work for a small area in a pinch. Carpeted floor: Swap to a small hand vacuum or a rubber-bristle lint brush instead, since sweeping doesn't work on carpet.
