Your toddler practises stepping up and down a single low, safe step over and over, building the balance and coordination behind a brand-new movement skill.

How to do it

  1. Find one low, stable step or set up a sturdy low platform on a non-slip surface.
  2. Clear the area around it so a stumble lands on soft, open floor.
  3. Stand close and offer a hand or a steadying touch as your toddler steps up.
  4. Let them turn and step back down, staying right beside them.
  5. Let them repeat up and down as many times as they like, spotting each try.

What you need

  • Low step
  • Clear floor space

Make it yours

Younger (12-15mo): Use the lowest possible step and hold both hands. Older (2-3y): Let them try with just a hand nearby, not held. Siblings: An older child can model the step while the toddler watches and copies
