A back-and-forth game where you and your child take turns offering each other two choices, silly or thoughtful, and each person says which they would rather and why.

How to do it

  1. Sit somewhere comfortable together, or play while walking, riding, or waiting.
  2. Offer the first choice out loud, giving two options to pick between (something silly like flying or being invisible, or something everyday like two favourite foods).
  3. Let your child pick one and say why in a sentence or two, then share your own pick as well.
  4. Swap roles so your child makes up the next would-you-rather for you.
  5. Keep trading turns for as long as it stays fun, then stop while everyone is still enjoying it.

Make it yours

Younger, 4 years: Keep both options concrete and familiar (two foods, two toys). One-word answers are fine. Older, 7-8 years: Add "and why" every time, or pose harder trade-offs like a big fast thing versus a small clever thing. Group: Go around the circle so everyone answers the same question before a new one is posed.
